What is a virtual dedicated server?  First, let’s talk about a server.  A server is nothing more than a high end computer somewhat like the one you use as your desktop computer.  A server doesn’t have a fancy graphics card, instead, its more optimized for 24/7 operation to be reliable and responsive.   A server does one thing, serve requests made by client computers that are accessing it for information or media of some type.

The term “dedicated” simply refers to a machine that is dedicated to your business or operation only and is not shared with other clients.  Say you have a web site that needs to be configured to meet certain requirements that could interfere with another client’s web site.  This is just one of the needs that are met by a dedicated server.  The server can be optimized for your operation and not be affected by other client’s configurations.
A virtual dedicated server is very similar to a dedicated server in the sense it is dedicated to your hosting operation.  Virtual dedicated servers have their own operating systems and hardware that are strictly for their use.  Some portions of the hardware server are shared amongst the virtual dedicated machines depending on the method they are setup.  This can include, sharing hard drives, raid controllers, motherboards and power supplies.
What does a virtual dedicated server mean to you?  Performance at a fraction of the cost of classic dedicated servers.  Configured how you want it, with what you need, and flexibility to scale as your needs change.
